The Chinese man and his companion, a 38-year old Chinese female, are the two confirmed cases of the new coronavirus infection in the Philippines.

These patients travelled from China via Hong Kong and arrived in the Philippines on 21 January. Upon showing coronavirus symptoms, the patients were isolated and treated at San Lazaro Hospital in Santa Cruz, Manila.

According to the DOH, the male patient developed severe pneumonia because of viral and bacterial infections from Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza B.

However, the patient was stable and showed signs of improvement during his last few days but the condition worsened within his last 24 hours.

As of 01 February, 24 patients tested negative for the new coronavirus, said the DOH and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). Four additional patients are being tested at the RITM.

A total of 36 cases were recorded in the country, of which two are confirmed. Currently, 23 patients are admitted and isolated, while ten have been discharged but are under strict observation.

DOH added that one previously reported mortality case tested negative for the new coronavirus.

Coronavirus impact globally

Followed by the World Health Organization (WHO)’s declaration of the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, the epidemic has already spread to 25 countries, marking a further spread globally.

Majority of infected cases and all deaths, except the recent one, have occurred in China. A total of 14, 403 cases have been recorded in China. In Hubei province alone, 1921 new cases emerged since yesterday.

Taiwan confirmed a total of ten cases, while the number of cases in the US reached eight.  New cases are emerging each day in different parts of the world, while the search for cure continues.

Travel restrictions rise

Many countries, including the US, Australia and the Philippines, have banned the entry of travellers from China and closed their borders to the East Asian country.

Countries are also speeding up their evacuations to bring back their nationals from Wuhan city.
